 Frequently Asked Questions

Which students will go to Rosa Parks Elementary?
All students living in the Rosa Parks Elementary community will go to the new elementary.

How do I register my Kindergarten student?
Kindergarten registration will be March 6th at the Rosa Parks Elementary beginning at 1:00.  If you have a child that will be entering Kindergarten, please register them that day. Bring a copy of your child’s birth certificate and an immunization record to the registration.  If you have not registered your child yet, please visit the office.

Will there be any buses to this school?
No.  According to school district guidelines, this will be a “walking school” meaning that there will be no school buses. Bussing will be provided for band, orchestra and Quests students.  Take a look at this article about the walking trend.  Make Way For The Walking Bus.

Will it be safe for my child to walk or ride their bike?
Many students will be walking or riding bikes to our school every day.  Staff and student safety patrols will be present to keep your children safe.  We would encourage your child to walk with an adult and to stick with groups of friends from your neighborhood.  Not only is it fun, it is also healthy.

I live in Parkside and that’s a long walk to school.  Should I drive my child to school?
You certainly could.  However, groups of parents in Parkside and Turnstone are dealing with the distance by coordinating neighborhood walking groups.  We fully support this type of thinking.

Is this an arts magnet school?
No.  This is a neighborhood school in which all subjects will be taught and not one subject focused on more than any other. We hold high expectations for our students in the areas of math, science and literacy.  We plan to pursue the arts in creative ways to enhance the academic achievement of all of our students.

If you include the arts, does that mean that other subjects will receive less instructional time?
No.  Through the process of integration, the arts will blend into other subject areas.  Examples may include learning a math concept through a drama experience, a song about Civil Rights, or scientific drawings.

Will there be an E.L.L. program for students that don’t speak English?
Rosa Parks Elementary will not house an E.L.L. program. Students requiring E.L.L. services will receive them at another district school.

Is there a PTSA?  How do I join?
Yes.

Will there be a Boys and Girls Club at the school?
Yes- it will offer before and after school activities.

Will orchestra or band be offered at the school?
Yes.  Both orchestra and band will be offered but not at Rosa Parks Elementary.  Students will attend these activities at Dickinson (Orchestra) and Evergreen Jr. High (band).  Transportation for these activities (buses) will be provided.

What extracurricular programs will be available at the school?
Right now we are planning a variety of extracurricular activities.  Some possibilities include chess club, math club, Battle of the Books, after-school drama, and a skateboard club.  We will definitely have plenty of fun, educational activities.

What opportunities will there be for my 5th or 6th grader?
Safety patrol is a great opportunity for 5th and 6th graders.  In addition, 6th graders will have Outdoor Education camp in the spring and will have other leadership possibilities in the school.

When will we get to vote on the name of the school?

Who decided the school mascot and school colors?
Our students!  Just like students got to vote for the name, they will be able to vote for school colors and a mascot.
