Children will write about topics that are personally significant.  They are beginning to consider their audience.  They will learn to deal with conventions such as spelling and punctuation.  Second grade students are expected to produce recount writing and early narrative writing.

Recount Story:  Personal recount (retells), Reports news  (Who, what, when, where, why), Nonfiction recounts (Factual story with a beginning, middle and end).

Narrative Story:  Tells a "made up" fantasy story about. . . (Setting, characters, problem, solution).

Handwriting:   D'Nealian manuscript (printing) Capital and lower case letters and numbers.

Conventions:   Capital letters, periods, question marks, exclamation points, commas. 

Sentence structure:  Verbs, nouns, pronouns, proper nouns, adjectives.

*While constructing class made, and individual books, the students will be using the 6+1 writing process.  The 6+1 Traits describe the key qualities of strong writing.

· Organization

· Word Choice

 

· Sentence Fluency

 

· Presentation

 

· Conventions

 

 

    

There will be many opportunities to organize, transcribe, and edit their thoughts in writing.

In the early stages of writing children learn to generate and organize ideas, produce a "rough" draft (sloppy copy),  edit, proofread, revise and publish a "final" draft (neat sheet).
