Project Based Homework |
|
The goal of this homework is for students to learn to find their own materials on topics that are interesting or important to them. Students begin this multi-day project by completing a proposal. They need to do some pre-thinking about what they want to learn, how they will learn it, and how they will demonstrate and share this learning. After the proposal is approved, students work independently gathering resources, reading, and writing. The students fill out fact sheets to help them organize their thoughts. After gathering information the students organize the information into a formal write up. (Parents can help students to correct spelling of the FINAL product. I still expect the vocabulary to be at the child’s level). The math element of the project will be for the student to invent and generate a word problem involving their chosen topic. The student will also need to solve the problem and show how they solved the problem.
1. Proposal · Fill out the proposal sheet for approval 2. Facts sheet/web (whatever why your child feels comfortable collecting information) · At least one 3. Write up · Should be at least one page long (about 20 sentences) and it may be typed if desired. 4. Sources · Students may use classroom books, library books, books at home, Internet, etc. If a student were having trouble finding information I would be happy to try to help them. 5. Visual presentation · Could include: pictures, drawings, collages, multimedia, book, poster, etc. 6. Story Problem · Students need to solve the problem so that other students can compare their answer. Shorter Alternative ProjectsIf students chose this kind of project the student will pick a homework card that describes the projects in more detail.

Basically anything that involves a combination of reading, writing, and/or math.
